Let’s face it - everyone gets angry. It happens to all of us - you, me, and even Will Smith. Someone cuts us off in traffic, gives us a dirty look before we’ve had our morning coffee, or just catches us at a bad time and we act out. But, for some of us, anger issues can be more extreme and may be difficult to manage.
If you are a Missouri resident who is suffering from anger-related issues, you may want to consider getting your medical marijuana card. While research is ongoing, some studies are showing that cannabis can be effective in controlling the emotional triggers that can cause angry outbursts.
Anger Itself Isn’t the Issue- How We Respond Is
Anger is a natural emotion, and an important one. Anger tells us when someone is taking advantage of us and helps us stand up for ourselves or for injustices that we see in the world. Some of the conditions that can cause anger include stress, frustration, anxiety, depression, fear, and many other factors. Sometimes, when we’re just irritable a trigger can cause us to get mad at something that wouldn’t normally bother us.
The problem isn’t anger alone. Where we can get into trouble is in how we respond to anger. When anger turns into rage, it can be difficult to control our actions. When we act-out due to rage, the resulting consequences can have a negative and lasting impact.
You May Suffer from Intermittent Explosive Disorder
If you are someone who finds that your angry outbursts send you into dangerous territory, you may suffer from Intermittent Explosive Disorder - a lesser-known mental health condition that affects sixteen million Americans.
AUTHOR’S NOTE: I am not a mental health professional. If you are suffering from anger issues, you should consult a doctor about the best course of action. If these issues are causing you to act out, or to consider acting out in a way that is harmful to yourself or someone else, please consult a medical professional and get help right away.
Those who suffer from Intermittent Explosive Disorder, or IED, may find they have extreme difficulty controlling their aggressive impulses and may act out by destroying property, verbally assaulting those around them, or inflicting violence.
Episodes typically last less than 30 minutes, but another outburst could happen at any time. IED outbursts are not proportional to the level of stress they are responding to. Those who live with IED are regularly moody, aggressive, irritable, and angry.
Unfortunately, IED is not easily diagnosed. The National Institute of Mental Health classifies someone with Intermittent Explosive Disorder after three episodes of uncontrolled anger that have resulted in violence, destruction, or threats of violence or destruction.
How Can Cannabis Help Manage Your Anger?
Have you ever noticed that regular consumers of marijuana tend to be more calm? That’s not just a coincidence. Medical marijuana tends to have a calming effect that can help you respond to triggers and other conditions that may lead to angry outbursts. Cannabis is known to be an effective treatment for many factors that can contribute to anger, including the following:
Medical Marijuana Can Ease Anxiety
If anxiety is causing angry outbursts to occur, cannabis is something you should consider. Medical marijuana has been shown to reduce anxiety by promoting a sense of calm, reducing stress, and providing an increased feeling of relaxation.
Cannabis Can Help Reduce Chronic Pain Symptoms
It’s easy to get mad when your body feels like it’s screaming at you. Chronic pain is not an easy burden to bear. The good news is that many patients who suffer from chronic pain are finding that medical marijuana helps them reduce the severity and intensity of their pain.
Medical Marijuana May Help With Depression
Research is ongoing, but early studies indicate that cannabis may be helpful in treating those who suffer from depression. The calming effects of cannabis that are known to help with anxiety may also be helpful for those who deal with clinical depression. If you suffer from depression, and the condition is leading you to have angry outbursts, medical marijuana may be able to help.
Medical Cannabis Improves the Quality of Sleep
If you aren’t sleeping well, your chances of being moody and irritable are going to increase. Studies have shown that medical marijuana is effective at helping you get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis. There’s a reason that bears get mad if you interrupt their hibernation. When people are tired, they are cranky.
Cannabis Could Be the Key to Keeping Calm
Medical marijuana is great for improving your overall wellbeing. Those who feel better typically have less issues managing their anger. If you are suffering from outbursts, there may be some underlying symptoms that are causing you to feel upset. Cannabis may be able to treat those symptoms. After-all, medical marijuana is regularly being used to treat hundreds of conditions.
When you consume cannabis, the THC affects your brain's cannabinoid receptors and calms your fight or flight response. This means that, while you may still get angry, cannabis could help you calm down before responding in a negative way.
