How To Make Your Own Cannabutter At Home

Infusing butter with cannabis is a simple way to create your own edibles. It may seem very effortless, but it can become complicated if you don’t follow all the steps. This recipe will help guide you through the process, so you will be making cannabutter at home in no time!

Note: When creating your own edibles at home, be aware of proper dosing for yourself. Homemade edibles are difficult to accurately measure. Remember to start low and go slow until you reach your desired amount.

How To Make Your Own Cannabis Butter

List of Ingredients:

  • One cup of butter

  • One cup of ground cannabis

  • One cheesecloth

  • One mason jar or storage container

Directions:

  1. Decarboxylate the cannabis.

    1. This is the most important step, however, it is often missed resulting in a weak or inactive cannabutter. Decarboxylating the cannabis activates the compounds and will convert the THCA into THC. One of the easiest ways to decarb cannabis is in the oven.

    2. Preheat the oven to 245F degrees.

    3. Place the cannabis buds on a non-stick baking sheet or on parchment paper to prevent sticking.

    4. Bake for 30-40 minutes. If the cannabis is older and dryer, it may take less time than newer, fresher cannabis.

    5. Be sure to check the cannabis every ten minutes and shake up the sheet in order to make sure the buds are exposed.

  2. When it is finished decarboxylating, grind up the cannabis on its coarser side.

  3. Add one cup of butter to a saucepan and melt it on low. Then, mix in one cup of water to prevent burning.

  4. As the butter melts, add in the ground cannabis and stir.

  5. Keep it on low heat and simmer for 2-3 hours.

    1. Occasionally stir, making sure it does not boil.

  6. While it is still melted, strain the finished butter.

    1. We recommend you line a strainer with cheesecloth and place it over a jar. This will allow you to slowly pour the butter through. Let it seep freely and do not squeeze the cheesecloth, as this will push bad-tasting plant fibers through.

  7. Place the jar in the refrigerator for about an hour or until it is chilled.

    1. Any excess water will seep to the bottom of the jar. You can leave it in there, pour it out, or move the butter into another container.

  8. Dose cautiously.

    1. Remember that the temperature, type of strain, and time are all factors that will contribute to how potent the effects of the cannabutter will be. Try a small amount first, and wait at least an hour to test the desired effect.

  9. Enjoy your homemade cannabis butter!
