What you need to know about making the perfect cannabis cocktails this summer.
Ready to plus up your summer cocktail repertoire? Try adding cannabis to your favorite recipes! When you get a Missouri marijuana card, you can shop at Missouri dispensaries and legally purchase all kinds of exciting cannabis products that may be just right in a glass of ice on a warm night.
Try mixing up your favorite summer recipes with a high twist. Just be careful, because mixing cannabis and alcohol can create a powerful and potent effect! We recommend using a lower concentration of THC (or even just a CBD formula) for cocktails, and limiting your consumption to one or (maybe) two drinks.
As always, drink responsibly and DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE!
Mixing Alcohol and Cannabis: Read This First
Here’s the deal: Smoking a joint has specific effects. Drinking a cocktail has specific effects. Smoking a joint while drinking a cocktail produces its own results. But drinking a cocktail that has been infused with cannabis is its own special carousel of feelings.
Liquor First, Cannabis Later
The booze in your cocktail will likely hit you the way it usually does, or at least it will be pretty similar. However, mixing medical marijuana into your cocktail will cause the THC to process through your system much like a cannabis edible.
Edibles are famously unpredictable, mostly because of the amount of time it takes before they start kicking in. Whatever you do, do not have another drink 15 minutes after your first one just because it doesn’t seem to be doing anything.
Wait at least two to three hours before having another drink. What’s your hurry anyway? Everyone knows hot, sticky, buggy Missouri summer nights are long and slow. Take time to savor the moment and enjoy an evening of destressing in the best way possible.
Start Low, Go Slow
If you are new to edibles, it’s probably a good idea to give them a try on their own first. This way, you know what they feel like and are prepared to handle them before adding in the extra potency of alcohol too. Additionally, we suggest checking out our guide to medical marijuana for people with a low tolerance in order to know what to look for at Missouri dispensaries.
Which Missouri Medical Marijuana Products Can You Mix With Alcohol?
You can mix just about any product found at a Missouri dispensary into your alcoholic beverage, but some will be better than others. If you are just getting started with medical marijuana—and particularly edibles—then you’ll want to look for products that are higher in CBD and lower in THC.
Tinctures
Tinctures are great for cannabis cocktails because they are usually gentle, you can easily customize your dose, and they are super convenient. Simply squeeze a dropperful—or half of one—into your favorite adult beverage before shaking or stirring and there you have it. Cocktail complete!
Gummies
Gummies can add an interesting kick of flavor into your cocktails, and they are just fun to play around with. Try dropping some gummies into the mix next time you make a simple syrup. Just remember your dosing!
Making Simple Syrup With Cannabis Gummies
You can use whichever gummies and flavors you find most appealing, but we are going to pick one for the sake of understanding how to measure your THC dose. For this simple syrup recipe, we are going to use Robhots sour gummies with 100mg of THC per package. That’s 10mg of THC per gummy.
Pour ⅔ cup of water and ½ cup of sugar into a saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
Turn heat to low, and add as many gummies as you would like to the mix.
Stir constantly until gummies dissolve.
Store simple syrup in tightly sealed container for up to six weeks.
Measure your finished product to know how many ounces you have.
Divide the total number of THC milligrams in the syrup by the number of ounces of syrup you have.
As you mix your drinks, know that one ounce is equal to about two tablespoons.
Let’s say that you ended up with 6 ounces when all was said and done, and you used two gummies for 20mg of THC. That would mean that each ounce of simple syrup has about 3.33mg of THC, and each tablespoon has just over 1.5mg of THC.
Cannabis Flower
You can use cannabis flower in your summer cocktails, but it requires the extra step of infusing something with it. You can directly infuse your alcohol with flower, make your own cannabutter or canna-oil, or go back to that simple syrup recipe and infuse cannabis flower instead of melting gummies. You’ll want to simmer your syrup for about two to three hours, adding more water as needed.
The thing you want to be careful with here, is that making your own infusions can result in unpredictable potency. If you decide to go this route, then you’ll want to try the product straight (without alcohol) before you mix it into your boozy beverages.
THC-Infused Beverages
Most Missouri dispensaries have THC-infused beverages that are ready to go and convenient for a refreshing summer cocktail. Keep makes lemonade, Bubba Kush rootbeer, and Blue Razz flavored sodas that are pre-measured and perfect for mixing with a shot of your favorite alcohol. We recommend being extra careful with these, however, because it’s a little too easy to lose track of how much you’ve had.
