Menstruation to Menopause: Medical Marijuana for Women

A woman experiences many changes to her body, mood, and appetite throughout her life. Not to mention, women have menstruation to deal with every month. Many people underestimate the severity of a variety of PMS symptoms.

Some of the most common symptoms of PMS may include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, cramps, backache, and much more. It’s very common for women to experience multiple symptoms at once when it’s that time of the month.

These symptoms are not favorable and can actually leave women in severe pain. Symptoms are different for every woman, and there is no way to predict how extreme a period may be when it comes on or which symptoms a woman will experience during her cycle.

Cannabis has many proven medicinal benefits, which is why 38 states have implemented their own medical marijuana program. Cannabinoids can provide general pain relief for a variety of symptom, but what about the symptoms that come with being a woman?

Can Marijuana Help With PMS Pain?

Many painful menstrual symptoms can be alleviated with the use of marijuana. THC is a powerful cannabinoid and has many healing properties, including the ability to help with general discomfort and pain.

As previously mentioned, many PMS symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable and even painful. One of the most painful symptoms women experience is cramps.

Cannabis and Period Cramps

During her cycle, a woman’s uterine muscles contract in order to clear out her uterus. This process can cause inflammation, cramping, and general discomfort.

There are tens of over the counter and prescription medications that claim they help alleviate painful period cramps. However, many women can quickly develop an immunity to these medications or for some women, they don’t help at all.

Between 2-10% of women over 25 have been diagnosed with endometriosis, a very painful disorder where the uterus tissue grows outside the uterus. During a woman’s period, the tissue swells and scars, which can be especially painful.

Periods can be especially agonizing for women with endometriosis, and there is no cure for the disorder.

A study was conducted in Australia in which women with endometriosis used cannabis for their symptoms, and many of them reported “prominent levels of pain reduction.” They saw improvement in their feelings of nausea, vomiting, and sleep patterns while using marijuana.

Women with endometriosis could benefit from trying a cannabis edible or oil for long-lasting relief during their periods. Transdermal patches across the abdomen may also aid in pain relief.

Migraines are another excruciating symptom that can come with PMS, and there have been studies conducted on this as well. A study was done, and a staggering 94% of participants with migraines reported relief from the symptoms when they used marijuana within the first two hours of the study.

Menopause Symptoms & Cannabis

Menopause is a process that means a lot of change for women and their bodies, and it can come with its own host of problems, including many uncomfortable symptoms similar to PMS.

Some of the most common symptoms of menopause might include hot flashes, chills, night sweats, sleep problems, slowed metabolism, insomnia, and many more.

Marijuana can help with insomnia and sleep problems including sleep patterns and the quality of sleep a person experiences.

Hot flashes and night sweats are extremely common in women who are entering menopause. THC can help! Try a marijuana tincture, which usually kicks in within 20 minutes and can last up to four hours, depending on THC levels. Vaping or smoking may help with this as well, try a hybrid strain for pain relief!
